Pre-FIRE Workshop – Microsoft Research India

Microsoft Research India is conducting a one day Pre-FIRE Workshop on August 2, 2014 for introducing the FIRE shared task on transliterated search and providing some basic technical knowhow required for participating in this shared task.
Who can participate: This is a unique opportunity for 3rd and 4th year Computer Science and IT undergraduate students. Postgraduate students and PhD candidates working in these areas are also welcome to participate in this workshop.
The workshop will assume basic knowledge of Computer Science (algorithms, basic statistics, tool handling) and programming. Students in their 2nd year CSE or IT, as well as students from other departments may also apply if they think they have the necessary background. Students from outside Bangalore can also apply, though they will NOT provide accommodation or travel support.

Topics:

 The workshop will cover the following topics:
  • Basic introduction to Information Retrieval (IR) and Web Search
  • Designing IR experiments
  • Evaluation metrics for IR system
  • Introduction to the Transliterated Search shared task
  • Machine transliteration
  • Building a transliterated search system from scratch
  • Introduction to basic IR tools, e.g., Lucene, Terrier
Location: Microsoft Research India, Bangalore
Date: August 2, 2014
Stipend: There is no registration fee for the workshop, but there are only limited number of seats. The participants have to arrange for their accommodation and travel expenses. Only lunch/tea/coffee will be provided by the organizers. An e-certificate of participation will be provided to all attendees. Those who want to participate in the shared task will be supported beyond the workshop.
